It’s with much excitement that SPRUKE Brisbane’s Ukulele Festival announces a sensational line-up of international and nationally acclaimed acts as the three day event prepares to take over Sunnybank Performing Arts Complex.
Our special guest is YouTube sensation and modern-day jazz ukulele diva from San Francisco, California, Cynthia Lin. Cynthia performs at the Spruketacular concert on Saturday 14 September in the SunPAC Theatre. Joining her is Gypsy Rumble and Adelaide fringe favourites Ukulele Death Squad. Cynthia’s legion of Brisbane fans can get up close at a Meet ‘n’ Greet before the concert.
The Ukulele Death Squad, billed as the world’s most dangerous ukulele group, perform at both Saturday night concert and the opening event of the festival, the Friday night Cabaret. Joining them is Melbournes’ The Thin White Ukes, performing the songs of David Bowie with small strings and big harmonies. Heroic, hilarious and hip, The Loveys bring their polished and sophisticated performance to spice up the cabaret. Rounding out the Friday night line-up in the most delicious way is Brisbane’s own Mama Juju and the Jam Tarts.
The festival program will ultimately feature more than 30 additional performances on 3 stages all weekend from local and interstate acts and community groups. A schools concert on Saturday afternoon features performances from six local schools. SPRUKE 2019 wraps up with a finale concert, Sunday afternoon, showcasing the Brisbane Ukulele Musicians Society (BUMS) community bands, as well as performances by the winners of the Sprukestar Open Mic Competition and the Parody Song Contest.
It may be the other Brisbane festival in September, but nothing beats the feel good vibes as musicians from all over Australia converge on SunPAC to share their enthusiasm and love of the ukulele. Entry to the festival precinct through the day is free, with performances, open mics, a music market and jams. Lots of free parking and accessible to all.
Stay tuned the tickets for the opening night Sprooky Cabaret, Spruketacular Concert and workshops will be released very soon through SunPAC.
As always the emphasis is on participation so grab your uke, don your happiest gear and BYO vibes as uke’n make music at SPRUKE 2019.
