What do you want to do at SPRUKE On The Square?

As the countdown continues to Spruke 2022 we are excited to share with you what you can expect to see and do at our fabulous event SPRUKE On The Square, Saturday 11 June, 9 am – 9 pm at King George Square. There is entertainment for everyone, no matter their level of experience. Here’s a quick and easy overview of what you or the family can do to suit your interest or skill level when you come to our big day of FREE ukulele fun.

Play ukulele

If you already play ukulele, SPRUKE on the Square will let you build your skills, meet old and new friends, show off your talents and have fun, fun, and more fun.

Activity What is it? When and where
Join one of the seven themed jams A jam is where a group of ukulele players play and sing together following a leader.  Songs are displayed o a screen for all to play and sing. On the hour from 10.00am to 4.00pm at The Flight Deck – a platform over the Pig ‘N’ Whistle pub.
Play at the open mic An open mic gives anyone the chance to play to an audience.  Fellow ukulele players are very supportive of newcomers and experienced players. At Speakers Corner from 9.00am to 4.00pm.  Ask the MC or put your name on the board.
Become a SPRUKE Spruiker Take a stroll through the city streets and play your ukulele.  You’re not busking just encouraging people to come to SPRUKE. From 9.00am to 4.00pm in the streets around King George Square.
Join the giant jam at Ukulele Under the Stars A  jam where leaders will get everyone playing and singing together.  Song lyrics and chords will be displayed on a giant LED screen. Ukulele Under The Stars Jam & Concert from 4.00pm on The Morris Brothers Stage in front of City Hall

 

Learn to play ukulele

If you have always wanted to play music, the ukulele is a simple and affordable option.  It’s not surprising that ukuleles outsell guitars in many countries around the world.  SPRUKE on the Square will get you started with ukuleles to try, simple advice, help to play your first song and have fun, fun, and more fun. Activity What is it? When and where
Try out a ukulele Talk to an expert on the different styles and sizes of ukulele. The ukulele marketplace at the Ann Street end of King George Square.  Open all day.
Join a beginner’s class A 30-minute lesson (some ukuleles available to borrow) where you’ll learn a simple song. On The Flight Deck – every hour starting at 10.30am until 3.30pm.
Sit in on a ukulele jam and feel what it’s like to play and sing in a group. A jam is where a group of ukulele players play and sing together following a leader.  Songs are displayed on a screen for all to play and sing. On the hour from 10.00am to 4.00pm at The Flight Deck – a platform over the Pig ‘N’ Whistle pub.
Join the giant jam at Ukulele Under the Stars A two-hour jam where leaders will get everyone playing and singing together.  Song lyrics and chords will be displayed on a giant LED screen. Ukulele Under The Stars Jam & Concert from 4.00pm on The Morris Brothers Stage in front of City Hall.

Hear what the ukulele can do

The ukulele is more than aloha music or novelty songs.  There are as many types of ukulele and performers as there are musical genres.  The bands on show will include players aged from nine to ninety.  We’ll have professional performers wowing you with the sounds they get from a ukulele.  There will be talented amateurs who never imagined they’d be up on stage.  This could be you if you join the ukulele community.

Hear the top Queensland ukulele players Professional performers show off what can be done with the ukulele. At the festival finale Ukulele Under The Stars on the Morris Brothers stage from  4.00pm
