Beginner to Intermediate – Playing in Parts
30 participants

Ruth Allen aims to help people become the best uke players they can in the shortest possible time, with the least effort, and the most fun. Ruth, who is James Hill trained and leads two uke groups in Port Macquarie, will be assisted by members of AUTLA, the Australian Ukulele Leaders and Teachers Association. So all participants will get plenty of personalised attention.
In this hands-on session you’ll work on a musical mash-up that will take you from Beethoven to Elvis, classical to rock and roll in the blink of a key change. The piece is arranged in parts for players of all levels from early beginner to fluent riffers – beginners will learn to decipher tablature and pick simple melody while more advanced players add harmony and more complex melody lines. At the end of the session we’ll pull it all together and perform it for the festival audience.

In the space of an hour, you’ll learn to:
* read tablature and pick melody lines
* play a 12 bar blues in the key of C and explore how to spice up basic chord shapes
try different strumming patterns and accents
* explore how musical dynamics – rhythm, tempo and volume – can be used to create interest in a performance * work with an ensemble to create a “from scratch” performance.

While the minimum requirement for this workshop is that participants know string names or numbers, and can play C F G7 chords, more proficient players certainly won’t be bored as there are parts for skilled pickers and tab readers. Uke group leaders will be able to take away the complete score, and a ready-made lesson plan.
