Kyas Ryo is a ukulele virtuoso from Japan. A multi-instrumentalist who began to play piano at the age of three. Inspired by the music of the Beatles, he took up guitar at 14 and by 23, he had received a YAMAHA teacher’s license and began to teach electric and acoustic guitar.
Enthusiastically taking up the ukulele in 2004, after watching George Harrison play, Kyas focused on his technique practicing up to 6 hours a day. His dedication paid off and he won the best technique award at the Kiwaya Ukulele Contest 2007— Japan’s premier ukulele event. He released his first solo album “Natural Flow” in Dec 2012.
Kyas has performed at the 40th Ukulele Festival Hawaii 2010 and is a regular at the Thailand Ukulele Festival. He has also performed in Japan, Korea, Philippines, China, and Taiwan.
In Japan Kyas is a well-known ukulele teacher, with several books to his credit. He is also the song writer and leader of Japanese pop band Song Sparrow.
Kyas’s performance covers all genres of music, smooth jazz, rock, pop and original compositions. His style and technique is always surprising and inspiring. It has been said that Kyas plays the ukulele at the speed of light and sounds like thunder. In Taiwan, he is known as the “Thunder Hand”.
This will be the first time Kyas has visited Australia, and the SPRUKE festival committee is thrilled to introduce him to our audience.
